Digital Fellowships to Help New Media Generation
June 11, 2009 in News Roundup
A new round of funding for budding media professionals has been unveiled to coincide with the launch of this year’s Digital City project.
The Digital City Project forms part of the Institute of Digital Innovation, based within the University of Teeside and helps budding media graduates, students and professionals develop their own digital media and technology projects.
Jim TerKeurst, Director of the IDI, said:
“Innovation is at the heart of global business, and these themes working together will make the Institute of Digital Innovation a terrific resource for the digital and creative industries in the North East.”
Candidates are encouraged to enter their proposals in one of three categories; the Junior Fellowship, the Innovation Fellowship or the Creative Fellowship. Successful applicants are then each awarded a grant which can be used to support the commercialisation, development or realisation of any digital media-themed idea.
Two grants for individual applicants, plus a further grant of £4,000 for team projects, are available for various running costs. £500 is awarded to junior level candidates only; this grant may be used to help with basic idea development or skills training. A larger sum of £4,000 is awarded to both individuals and in some instances, groups, to help with the development of more complex ideas that exploit new technologies which will eventually lead to the creation of a new business.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Teesside, Professor Graham Henderson, explained the important role of the Institute and fellowship programme.
He said:
“The IDI has a major role to play in the region, attracting and generating new talent, working with companies on high level skills and development opportunities, and producing the ideas and the businesses for a digital supercluster.”
Eligible applicants must be aged 18 years or older and based within the North East of England. Entries are particularly encouraged from candidates who have not previously been awarded a fellowship and have undertaken a significant proportion of their research within the Institute.
