Google verdict astonishes the online world

The most interesting news from the digital world this week came undisputedly from Italy. Three Google executives were convicted of privacy violations over a YouTube video showing an autistic teenager being bullied.

Among the convicted was Google’s chief legal officer, David Drummond, who has said he’s “outraged” by a decision he describes as setting a “chilling precedent”.

Old-fashioned branding in trouble?

question-mark (1)The future of ad-supported traditional branded sites is looking uncertain, a Marketing Week article suggests.

The threats imposed by ad networks, exchanges and demand-side buying platforms is worrying Web publishers as sites are feared to be turning into commodities.

Tolman Geffs, co-president of the independent investment banking provider Jordan Edmiston Group, pointed out that brand advertising might be in trouble.

Geffs, who spoke at the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s annual meeting, referred to statistics that show more money being spent on direct marketing and promotions than in branding in 2009.

This means advertisers are buying audiences rather than ads.

US government lobbied to consider open source as piracy

opensource_logoAccording to a University of Edinburgh lecturer, Anders Guadamuz, an influential lobby group is asking the US government to consider open source software as an equivalent to piracy.

Guardian technology blogger, Bobbie Johnson, writes that to the astonishment of many, the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) has asked the US Trade Representative to consider countries like Indonesia, Brazil and India to be watched closely because of their use of open software.

Social media boost for Carling Cup final

Flash for smartphones within a year

flashIconFlash videos can finally be played on smartphones, the vice president of Adobe has revealed.

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, David Wadhwani promised the newest Flash player, 10.1, to be running on a ‘variety of smartphones’ over the next 12 months, BBC reported.
