World Cup goes digital
June 11, 2010 in News Roundup
Football fans can keep track of all the happenings in South Africa wherever they are thanks to various apps and websites.
ITV has rolled out a free, ad-funded app to watch World Cup matches live on an iPhone. The app will feature all the games to be broadcast on ITV1, as well as further matches to be broadcast on ITV4. The ITV website will also feature live coverage of the tournament.
Fifa.com will be the main source of information for many football fans. Ready to take on the flood of visitors, the site can be personalised by registering and logging in. Fifa has also adapted a Twitter-like approach with a live stream of information and links.
A recent survey by PC World found that nearly a third of British football fans will be tuning in online with one in ten using a smartphone.
Use of social media is also expected to hit record numbers during the tournament. Compared to the last World Cup in 2006, social networking tools have taken a huge leap in user numbers and have also been widely adapted by the media sites.
