Goodbye to doormen? – meet your new digital bouncer
July 8, 2010 in News Roundup
A late-night venue in Sydney is testing a new security system that could put bouncers out of work.
The ‘Nightkey’ system scans party people’s IDs, snaps a video shot of them and records a “finger pin” scan to complete the check.
The information is then sent on to a computer allowing the venue to identify and refuse entry to anyone previously ejected for causing trouble.
Tony Williams, general manager of the Coogee Bay Hotel, points out that the scan is not a fingerprint as it only identifies key points on a finger. He assures that the information is only available for Nightkey developers and it cannot be sold to marketing companies.
The new system has been in use for three weeks and so far all is going well. Williams says he’s witnessed the efficiency of the Nightkey himself.
“People either agree to go with it or walk away. One night I saw a taxi-load of undesirables rock up. They took one look at the system and jumped back in another taxi”, he said.
