Cunning Linguistics

April 4, 2011 in Blog, News Roundup

Microsoft-Apple1

Lawyers from Microsoft and Apple have been engaged in linguistic jousting this week over ownership of the term ‘App Store’, which the latter are claiming is theirs exclusively. Where each companies’ respective legal teams have failed to win, both Microsoft and Apple hope that the hiring of professional linguists will be able to swing victory their way.

Republicans torn over porn storm

March 21, 2011 in Blog, News Roundup

xxxThe five-year legal battle to block the .xxx suffice for all websites featuring pornographic content looks set to end as the Obama administration has raised no new objections, therefore ‘green lighting’ the move. The development comes after much original opposition from the Republican Bush administration. A Republican spokesman said “Maiming, torturing and killing thousands of men, women and children is one thing, but naked nipples, buttocks and unwashed sex parts is another thing entirely.”

Sony launches Qriocity music service

January 13, 2011 in Blog, News Roundup

Qriocity_Logo

We intended to comment on the seemingly pointless Qriocity streaming service recently launched by Sony in the UK but, well, the Guardian has  been kind enough to already do so in their technology blog.

While NMM always tries to remain impartial and write unbiased reviews, we can’t help but agree with the writer. Of course we are always happy to be proved wrong but the Qriocity (pronounced ‘curiosity’ we assume) service appears to be moving the industry backwards, not forwards.

A little known pop group comprised of school friends from the north of England have become the world’s slowest overnight smash thanks to making their music available via iTunes.

The Beatles, from Liverpool, who self release their music via their own record label Apple and who cite their influences as “Oasis, Wings and peace”, have sold a staggering two million individual songs and more than 450,000 albums in their first week of release via Apple’s (no relation) iTunes store.

Their most popular song is Here Comes The Sun, which was inspired by a holiday that drummer and sometime voiceover artist Richard ‘Ringo’ Starkey took in Porthmadog, Wales as a child.

The end for Sony Walkman

The news today that Sony would no longer be making its cassette Walkman filled me with nostalgia. I still remember myself and my younger brother getting our first Walkmans for Christmas roughly 10 years ago. I think the only cassette I had to play on it then was ‘The Simpsons’ album.

The creation of the Walkman was a real innovation as it allowed the user to listen to their own collection of music wherever and whenever they chose to.

The Walkman was born in 1979, when the Sony chairman asked his designers to make an item which would help him pass the time when on business trips, and allow him to listen to his favourite operas. Since its release the product has sold over 200 million units.

Review: The Social Network, 2010

October 22, 2010 in Blog, News Roundup

the-social-network-movie
How interesting that a film about the social media phenomenon that is Facebook is released at the same time that it has been replaced at the top of the networking pile by Twitter. Nevertheless The Social Network is intelligent and at moments a deeply suspenseful film which shouldn’t be missed by fans of the site and newcomers alike.

Part courtroom drama, part thriller, The Social Network is adapted from author Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires and follows the inception and subsequent law suits surrounding Mark Zuckerberg and the ownership of the new media phenomenon.

Maverick computer-based media The Internet has caused controversy this by declaring diminutive sex goblin Prince “over.”

“Prince is like MTV,” says The Internet, 21, of Bracknell. “At one time in 1986 it was hip, but now it’s just full of adverts and videos of girls in thongs. MTV, I mean. As far as I am aware Prince isn’t full of girls in thongs. But he is over. Over.”
