First tenants sign up at new North East digital hub

North East digital agency AYO Media has become the first to sign up for space in a flagship new £9.9m centre for creative industry.

The rapidly growing digital specialist will relocate in the Northern Design Centre on Baltic Business Quarter near Gateshead Quayside.

Trebling their office space, the directors are confident that the move will be a catalyst for future growth.

“This is a huge milestone in the growth of the business as the new office will enable us to enhance our client servicing, provide our staff with a superb working environment and offer the flexibility for future expansion”, managing director Rob Mathieson said.

Another Doctor Who success for Newcastle production house

The North East’s largest independent production company Dene Films is about to see another one of their successful Doctor Who documentaries released.

Produced and directed by BAFTA-nominated producer Chris Chapman, ‘Looking for Peter’ is included in the release of the 1964 Doctor Who story ‘The Sensorites’ on BBC DVD.

The documentary, which is presented by Sony Award-winning comedian Toby Hadoke, goes out on the road to discover the truth about The Sensorites’ mysterious writer Peter R Newman.

“We’re really proud of this one”, Chris said. “And the reaction it’s been getting so far has been very touching.”

North East software firm sets national example on turning Autism into ability

Staffed almost entirely by analysts who have Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, social enterprise ‘Autism Works’ is turning positive traits of the condition into unique skills.

The Newcastle-based company is the first in England to take such steps in employing people with Autism, of which 85% are currently unemployed in the UK.

Offering software and website testing services to clients across the region, Autism Works recognised that some of the characteristics of the condition can make people with Autism exceptionally talented software testers.

“People on the Autism spectrum can make brilliant employees; diligent, loyal, precise and very often highly-intelligent”, managing director Peter Macdonald said.

“What is more, their attention to detail, methodical approach to tasks and frequent enjoyment of repetitive processes can make them exceptional software testers.”

New website showcases rich history of Fish Quay business hub

North East digital company Armadillo is working on a campaign to promote the North Shields Fish Quay business hub.

With support from North Tyneside Council, Armadillo is delivering a range of digital and offline media to highlight the historic Quay both as an area for tourism and as a desirable business location.

A new website, launched in December, celebrates the rich history of the Fish Quay boasting a variety of media such as original and archive photography, video clips, stories, property downloads and desktop calendars.

Dedicated Google Map puts North East tech scene in limelight – make sure you’re not missing

The North East creative sector now has a dedicated Google Map collating all the essential information about the vibrant industry for tech journalists and potential investors.

The map, created by local digital innovator Paul Lancaster, is building on the success of the PostOffice, a city centre venue that has been buzzing with events ever since it was established last June.

According to Paul, the events reflect the very talented pool of freelance and self-employed developers and creatives.

“At the grass-roots level, most of the activity organised by attendees of User Groups like @PHPNE, @rubynortheast and @DesignInterest falls under the radar of established support organisations and media”, he said.

Google takes giant leap into social search with Search+

Google has taken a major step towards relevant social search results with the announcement of Search+ this week.

Search+ provides users with the option of ‘Personal Results’ – a unique search results page combining content from people you’re connected to on Google+ with other relevant search results from across the web.
