5 million Ovi downloads for North East apps developers

Newcastle apps and games developer Fluid Pixel has hit 5 million downloads in the Nokia Ovi store.

Since its launch in 2007 Fluid Pixel has enjoyed consistent growth and has featured on the Ovi Store’s top developer list for a while now.

“Part of our success has been targeting the whole range of Nokia devices, from legacy S40 devices to the latest and greatest smart phones”, Fluid Pixel wrote on their blog.

Slang no problem for new translation app

vocreA new app is set to put all your awkward holiday communication problems in the past.

Vocre, developed by translation company myLanguage, enables iPhone users to translate their speech into a foreign language.

“It’s like asking your friend down the street ‘How would I say this in Spanish?”,  founder and CEO of myLanguage Andrew Lauder said.

Vocre includes colloquialisms and slang to make communication as authentic as possible.

Work placement student develops app to save Europe’s finances

Georgij Cernysiov, a top student on a training course for aspiring games developers, has managed to publish his own original title during a placement.

While working for Sunderland-based educational software company Caspian Learning, Georgij created and published a humorous mobile app ‘Euro Destruction’ for iPad and iPhone.

‘Paparappzi’ allows registered users to capture and report news from their smartphone which can be sent live directly to Blottr.com.

As the first app of its kind, it is hoped it will encourage more people to document local news.

New system means easier shopping on all mobile devices

damcartRetailers will be able to set up a mobile web or ‘App’ version of their eCommerce store across all mobile platforms thanks to a new system.

DAMcart, which completely integrates with retailers’ eCommerce platforms, is unique in that it is available across iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPad and iPad2.

The system was developed by business telecommunications provider DAMtel.

Most companies yet to find the secret of a killer app

More and more companies are realising that a ‘killer app’ is a fantastic way of engaging people in their business or product.

However, a new survey complied by Deloitte and featured in the Sunday Telegraph, shows that many of these companies are yet to find a winning formula in creating apps.

The survey found that 45% of smartphone owning consumers downloaded an app at least once a week but less than 1% of apps published by global consumer and healthcare companies were downloaded more than a million times.

North East entrepreneur looking for killer ideas for office phone apps

AlYongA Sunderland-based entrepreneur is in search of new ideas and collaborators to explore the huge market of internet-enabled office phones.

Al Yong, Managing Director of unified communications firm Affinity Systems, is looking to work with software developers with innovative ideas for exploiting the unused market.

“Most offices these days are equipped with internet phones which are only ever used for making calls, when they could be used as a new platform for apps”, he said.

“We’re talking about tens of millions of handsets, on every desk in every office in the land, so there’s huge market potential, and the possible applications of this technology are effectively endless.”
