Another Doctor Who success for Newcastle production house

The North East’s largest independent production company Dene Films is about to see another one of their successful Doctor Who documentaries released.

Produced and directed by BAFTA-nominated producer Chris Chapman, ‘Looking for Peter’ is included in the release of the 1964 Doctor Who story ‘The Sensorites’ on BBC DVD.

The documentary, which is presented by Sony Award-winning comedian Toby Hadoke, goes out on the road to discover the truth about The Sensorites’ mysterious writer Peter R Newman.

“We’re really proud of this one”, Chris said. “And the reaction it’s been getting so far has been very touching.”

BBC opens up digital course to public

bbc_wallA digital journalism and social media course previously only available to BBC staff has been opened up to the public for the first time.

After piloting the course for external journalists in May, the BBC Academy decided to extend it to the general public with the first fully open sessions taking place on 26 June.

The 5-day course focuses on news gathering but also features aspects of strategy and community building.

Ambitious young people wanted by BBC North

bbc_northTalented youngsters in the North West have been presented with the opportunity to become an apprentice at BBC North.

Roles in BBC Children’s, Marketing & Audiences, Technology Operations, Learning and HQ North, all based at the BBC’s new home in Manchester, are now open for applications.

The apprenticeships are open to applicants from the Greater Manchester area, aged 16 and over, who have left formal education.

Radio giants come together on new website

Radioplayer.co.uk groups together radio outlets such as the BBC, Global, GMG, Bauer Media and UTV Radio in an attempt to boost ‘sluggish’ listening numbers.

Accessibility on agenda for BBC and Google

Web developer Gary Robson says that the BBC provides a great example of what can be achieved when the owner of the site views accessibility as a basic requirement, not an inconvenient optional extra.

In addition to making sure all of their content is usable by the widest possible range of people, the broadcaster has also dedicated a separate site to provide accessibility help for its users.

Review: BBC series Virtual Revolution wraps up

The last part of BBC2′s, Virtual Revolution, examines how the web, and social networking especially, has changed our relationships. Titled, ‘Homo Interneticus?’, the episode contemplates the extent to which the web enriches or distorts humanity.

BBC app plans troubling commercial rivals

bbc_appsThe first BBC iPhone apps will be launched in April, the company announced this week.

BBC News app is first one on the launch list, followed by BBC Sport app in June – just in time for the Football World Cup. A dedicated app for the iPlayer is also in plans.

First made available to iPhone, the apps will shortly after be compatible with BlackBerry and Google’s Android based devices.
