Arts and digital communities come together in new North East initiative

The new CultureCode initiative is Codeworks’ latest and most ambitious attempt at community organising, Joeli Brearley Head of Sector Development told NMN.

“There is a digital revolution brewing in the world of the arts and cultural organisations”, she said.

“We have known for years that there was tremendous potential if we could find ways to help artists and arts organisations work more closely with people in the digital world – from creating new forms of art to helping arts organisations better use digital tools in everything they do.”

The CultureCode initiative is a set of four events, all looking to spark and facilitate innovative collaboration between the culture sector and the digital professionals.

A digital community to be proud of – Codeworks exec looks back at successes of 2011

Second Ignite event provides invaluable opportunity for digital community

Codeworks bosses see a bright future for the Ignite events as an inspiration for the North East digital sector.

The second Ignite event, which took place last Thursday, attracted a buzzing group of local digital and creative professionals to the Vermont Hotel in Newcastle.

Emilia Flockhart, Communications Executive at Codeworks, said the event completely exceeded the organisers’ expectations and received excellent feedback.

“Everyone seemed to have had a great time, saying it was both fun, inspiring, and entertaining”, she said.

Platform to shine

The Ignite format features 5-minute talks about participants’ personal or professional passions. One talk can have a maximum of 20 slides with each slide displayed for 15 seconds then automatically advanced.

Following last year’s success, the second Codeworks design event, ‘The Battle’, challenged some of the region’s top designers in a fast-paced competition.

The event attracted a crowd of 150 people from the North East’s digital industry at the Performance Academy at Newcastle College to see eight graphic designers tackle 20-minute design challenges.
