Nokia’s lead designer showcases Lumia 800 in the North East

Peter Griffith, lead industrial designer at Nokia, showcased the company’s new Lumia 800 smartphone at an event in the Baltic last week.

The Finnish mobile giant is hoping Lumia 800 will have what it takes to challenge the almighty iPhone in the lucrative smartphone market.

New Media Now spoke to Griffith about the compay’s approach to design and what influences and inspires them.

Lively North East design community comes together to swap ideas

£495,000 up for grabs for design entrepreneurs

The Keeping Connected Business Challenge, organised by the Technology Strategy Board and the Design Council, is set to divide a pot of £495,000 between design teams that come up with the best ideas.

The brief is ‘to develop innovative services that create, improve and sustain connectedness for older adults to friends, family, the community and younger generations’.

There's still a place for single-use devices – context is all

flipIn an age when a mobile phone can perform the function of a camera, video recorder and so much more, why bother with single-use devices at all?

In an article on The New York Times website, Nasahn Sheppard, director of industrial design at Smart Design, the company that designed the Flip camcorder, ponders how we explain the strong sales of certain single-use products when they are suddenly facing much wider competition.

He puts forward a convincing argument that the variety of the smartphone is not always the answer.

Global Studio brings international flavour for Northumbria design students
