Titled ‘Pitch ‘N’ Toss, the first app funded through the regional screen agency Northern Film & Media’s fund for iPad developers, has been launched.

‘Pitch ‘N’ Toss’ invites players to throw coins against a wall in a modern re-creation of the popular gambling game originating in the 18th century. Players are taken through 40 levels of increasing difficulty that require a combination of skill, guile and puzzle solving.

Developed by Newcastle-based DarlingDash, Pitch ‘N’ Toss has already been labelled as “the most addictive game I’ve ever played” by Channel 4 newsman Nick Martin.

Tim Allison, Producer at DarlingDash, said the product was developed with the iPad in mind, maximising the screen real estate and rich media environment.

“Pitch n Toss is a game I used to play as a kid”, he said.

“It’s very much an old school concept with new rules for the 21st century. I hope people get as much fun out of playing it as we did developing it.”

Launched exclusively for the Apple iPad, Pitch ‘N’ Toss is available to download through the iTunes store at £2.99.

Those wanting to test before buying can download a Lite version of the game for free.

The game includes a soundtrack of original music commissioned by Ed Carter of Winter North Atlantic – who was recently featured on BBC Radio 6.

Northern Film & Media’s (NFM) iPad Fund is supported by the ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13. The ERDF programme is bringing over £300m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region.

According to Tom Harvey, CEO of Northern Film & Media, the rapidly growing apps market offers a ‘fantastic’ opportunity for the North East’s talented digital media companies.

“We are keen to hear from developers in the region with commercial ideas for all platforms and look forward to Darling Dash tapping into the commercial potential of retro gaming on the iPad”, he said.

The next NFM funded iPad app is expected to be launched early December.

Digital tools play a key role in driving innovation in today’s creative industries. But what new tools are on the horizon and how will creative businesses harness them to drive exciting new business opportunities?

What will creative professionals – from architects to fashion designers to games developers and others – be using to create and produce content in the future?

The Creative Industries KTN would like to invite you to contribute and influence their latest Beacon Project, Exploiting Digital Tools, which will examine the potential these tools have to transform the creative and production processes.

A workshop is being held at Cornerhouse on Thursday 8th of July. This is a unique opportunity to share your expertise and to influence this exciting project along with other innovators from across the creative and technology sectors. Working with leading innovation company Whatif they will be carrying out some initial research including an online survey and expert interviews. The workshops will then create and validate a number of future scenarios.

You should be self motivated, able to work to deadlines, be flexible and adaptable, presentable and able to speak to customers. We’re a close team and expect everyone to take ownership for what they do, showing initiative and to contribute to improving the way we do things. We offer flexibility in working hours and expect it in return when deadlines call – this isn’t always a 9 to 5 job. If we all do well, we all share in the rewards.

The position is primarily based at our Middlesbrough offices, with occasional travel required to customer sites or our Newcastle office.
