According to Atau Tanaka, Director of Newcastle University’s Culture Lab, what it means to be a creative media lab in today’s society is fundamentally different to what it meant 25 years ago.

Back in the mid 80s, when the MIT media lab was founded and researchers were just beginning to innovate with mobile technologies, ‘being digital’ was still a concept.

“Today, the society is digital – the future has arrived and that changes what’s at stake”, Atau said.

“It changes the social relevance and pertinence of a lab like ours to have more of a social function.”

Tackling social exclusion

As part of that new social role, Newcastle University is embarking on an ambitious interdisciplinary research project, SIDE (Social inclusion through the digital economy).

The five year project looks at the power of digital technologies to combat social exclusion – a topic that’s highly relevant in the North East, Atau said.

“If we can show examples of world-class cutting-edge technologies applied to social renewal and social innovation, there we really start to deal with the deeper questions of what technology can do for our lives.”

“It’s more than just entertainment, it’s more than just luxury, it’s more than just making life convenient for us.”

‘Artist-led innovation’ on the agenda

As a first-time Thinking Digital speaker, Atau says he is “proud and very happy” to be involved in an event which he said “brings into the North East an international dimension of cutting-edge technology”

As a sponsor of the event, Culture Lab will also be hosting a stand where conference guests can find out about all of SIDE’s projects.

On stage, Atau plans to talk about ‘artist led innovation’.

“I’ll be telling a story of a specific field work where we went to Burkina Faso, in Africa, to villages where there was no infrastructure, no electricity, no running water.”

Atau Tanaka went to Burkina Faso last December as part of the SIDE project. Image courtesy of SIDE.

“We showed up with our electric generator and a laptop computer, iPhones and so on to play a concert of electronic music with local village musicians and to hold spontaneous ad-hoc workshops with digital sound and digital photography.”

“There’s things that we can do coming from a place like the Culture Lab that are different from what an NGO would do.”

“We’re not bringing water, we’re not brining food and clothes, there are charities that do that very well.”

Buzzing North East

Atau came to Newcastle four years ago leaving behind a research position at Sony in Paris.

What attracted him to the North East was the opportunity to join the Culture Lab, a place which he describes as world-class.

“The reputation of Newcastle is of a very cultural city that punches way above its weight”, he said.

“Newcastle and the North East in general is very very active in digital, the creative industry is very strong here.”

Launched in the beginning of April, Kyeo.tv is using the latest multimedia technology to deliver news and in-depth features on local arts, music, film, theatre, comedy, food and literature.

The site will also feature audio and video interviews with artists, musicians, writers and politicians.

Andrew Fenwick, the editor of Kyeo.tv, says the launch has gone incredibly well. The response to the content as well as from the advertisers has exceeded everyone’s expectations.

He said: “I think, like us, the advertisers saw a big gap in the region for quality, independent video-led arts content. Multimedia technology is something which other publishers in the region just don’t seem to be embracing as much as they probably should.”

Kyeo.tv is run by a small editorial team, but is looking to utilise crowd-sourcing to provide its content.

The site features fully integrated Twitter and social bookmarking capabilities, innovative mobile applications and a daily email bulletin service.
