Second generation Kindle to compete with the iPad

kindle_stanidingupAmazon is rumored to have bought Touchco, a company that builds touch-screen interfaces enabling several simultaneous presses at a time.

The new feature would spice up the battle between Amazon and Apple in the search for a perfect e-reader.

Colin Sebastian, analyst at Lazard Capital, told the The New York Times that any device not offering a touch-screen feature will be at disadvantage.

He said: “If touch-screens were added to the Kindle or other Amazon devices, it would bring them up to date with the plethora of other screens consumers are becoming used to.”

Can the iPad create a new market?

ipadApple’s iPad is claiming to have combined the benefits of a laptop and a smartphone.

The much-awaited launch event on Wednesday was followed by speculative articles contemplating the potential of the newest gadget in the iFamily.

Claiming to take the browsing experience to another level, the iPad will – as Steve Jobs modestly put it – enable you to “hold the whole web in your hands”.

Amazon launches Kindle iPhone app for UK market

kindle_iphoneAmazon has launched its Kindle e-reader app for the iPhone and iPod Touch in the UK.

The free app synchronises bookmarks between the iPhone and the Kindle. It was launched in the US in March but has only just been made available in the UK following the Kindle’s launch to the British market.

Other features on the app include the ability to choose font sizes and the number of words per line when reading on the iPhone. Users will also be able to read books in full colour and sample opening chapters.

New e-book platform to set the bar high?

ebook (1)The world’s largest book distributor is releasing a new e-book platform called ‘Blio’ in January.

According to an article in The Independent, Barker & Taylor – who distribute 1 million books a year – has committed to making 180,000 titles available via the platform.

Developed in partnership with technologic futurist Ray Kurzweil, CEO of Kurzweil Technologies, Blio is expected to be the next big thing in the e-reader industry.
