Experimental YouTube film set for summer showings

A feature-length film, produced by Sir Ridley Scott and made up of snapshots of thousands of people’s lives uploaded to YouTube, will hit British cinema screens in June.

Life in a Day, directed by Kevin Macdonald, pieces together 80,000 clips from 192 countries, with more than 4,500 hours of footage submitted.

Award-winning film director shoots with iPhone

South Korean film-maker Park Chan-wook used Apple’s iPhone to shoot the entirety of his new fantasy-horror film Paranmanjang.

Best known for his blood-soaked thriller Oldboy, Park said the smartphone created “strange” effects and was especially interesting as it’s a medium the audience is used to.

Blade Runner gets thumbs up from NASA

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner was classed as believable sci-fi by NASA.

NASA has listed some of the most flawed sci-fi movies in a campaign to establish a more authentic approach to science fiction in film.

The worst offender was Roland Emmerich’s recent disaster movie 2012, which depicts the end of the world as predicted by an ancient Mayan calendar.

NASA scientists have picked apart several aspects of the film declaring them “absurd”.

Innovative cross-media project launched in the North East

Shape-Shifter
A Northern Film & Media funded arts project is experimenting with storytelling through various different media.

Independent production company New Black Films is working with Pure Grass Films to develop a transmedia product, which will be delivered in film, comic and novel format.

Shape Shifter is a supernatural thriller set in the seemingly sleepy fictitious Northumberland village of Barrae.

Review: The Social Network, 2010

How interesting that a film about the social media phenomenon that is Facebook is released at the same time that it has been replaced at the top of the networking pile by Twitter. Nevertheless The Social Network is intelligent and at moments a deeply suspenseful film which shouldn’t be missed by fans of the site and newcomers alike.

Part courtroom drama, part thriller, The Social Network is adapted from author Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires and follows the inception and subsequent law suits surrounding Mark Zuckerberg and the ownership of the new media phenomenon.
