New software plug-in introduces live rendering for Google SketchUp

The live rendering enabled by the Shaderlight plug-in allows designers to see their 3D images develop while working.

A fully integrated plug-in – Shaderlight – introduces interactive rendering to Google SketchUp 7 and 8.

The new plug-in, launched last week, enables 3D designers to see their image develop on screen as they continue to work inside SketchUp.

Google Street View captures penguins – and dead bodies

The implications of "googling"

googlingAccording to the statistics site Worldometers, nearly 2 billion Google searches are made each day. That’s about the same amount that there are internet users in the world.

Google has exclusively claimed the meaning of the phrase “to search on the internet”. Who needs to be good at searching for information anymore when you can simply “google it”?

We put this question to Helen Blanchett – a trainer in web skills specialising in how to effectively find and evaluate information on the web. She has worked closely with search engines since the early days – long before Google existed.

The internet before Google

The search giant’s journey from a garage in Silicon Valley to a huge global success is without doubt an inspirational subject for a feature article, but we looked at what the internet was like before Larry and Sergey registered Google.com in 1997.

Dave Hartland has been working with the internet since the early 1990s. Currently the director of a staff development organisation JISC Netskills based at Newcastle University, Dave’s first job in IT was in 1991 as a user support officer for Mailbase, a national email-based internet service.

We asked Dave to talk about the early days of the internet and life before Google.

Google loses defamation case in France

google_defamation (1)Google’s “suggest” function has led to the search giant being found guilty of defamation in France.

A French internet user sued the company after his identity had been linked with words including “rapist”, “rape” and “satanist” in automatic searches.

The Superior Court of Paris found the search giant guilty of “public slandering of a private individual” in what is believed to be a landmark decision.

Google encourages companies to engage with social media

Speaking at the AdTech conference last week, Benjamin Faes hailed social media as a “power thing companies need to embrace”.

According to Faes, online display advertising is still in its infancy and social media has what it takes to bring about a “display revolution”.

Google computers and Facebook phones?

google_chrome_os (1)As Google announce plans to enter the lucrative laptop market, Facebook continues to deny rumours they are to release their own mobile phone.

The search giant is planning to enter the  laptop market with its range of Google-based “netbooks”.

Glen Murphy, the lead designer on Google’s Chrome operating system, said the first Chrome computers are due to go on sale later this year.

Google Instant does searching for you

google_instantAfter getting the internet buzzing on the eve of their ‘must-attend’ event, Google rolled out its new search ‘Google Instant’ yesterday.

Currently available only to users signed in to a Google Account, the new feature streams search results simultaneously as the user types the query in the search field.

Marissa Mayer, Google’s Vice President of Search Products and User Experience, compared the new feature to power steering in cars.

New Google doodle advocating CSS3

Marking the company’s 12th birthday, Google’s homepage yesterday featured a ‘bouncing balls’ doodle, showing off their programmers’ skills and sending a message out to the online community.

Reacting to the hovering of the cursor, the doodle is said to consist of lots of pieces of a web page, each using CSS3, an emerging standard which the company has been eager to push along with HTML5.
