If computers were cars, Apple’s iPad would be something very fancy, with ridiculous seats and a giant spoiler on the back.

There’s no denying that the iPad is a good-looking piece of kit, and it’s futuristic style of “all-screen, no keyboard” is going to define what computing will be in the future. Amazon’s Kindle device looks similar, but is more focused around reading (and buying) any book, anywhere. These two devices are a glimpse of what computers are going to look like from now on: small, flat, and pocketable.

Second generation Kindle to compete with the iPad

kindle_stanidingupAmazon is rumored to have bought Touchco, a company that builds touch-screen interfaces enabling several simultaneous presses at a time.

The new feature would spice up the battle between Amazon and Apple in the search for a perfect e-reader.

Colin Sebastian, analyst at Lazard Capital, told the The New York Times that any device not offering a touch-screen feature will be at disadvantage.

He said: “If touch-screens were added to the Kindle or other Amazon devices, it would bring them up to date with the plethora of other screens consumers are becoming used to.”

Amazon launches Kindle iPhone app for UK market

kindle_iphoneAmazon has launched its Kindle e-reader app for the iPhone and iPod Touch in the UK.

The free app synchronises bookmarks between the iPhone and the Kindle. It was launched in the US in March but has only just been made available in the UK following the Kindle’s launch to the British market.

Other features on the app include the ability to choose font sizes and the number of words per line when reading on the iPhone. Users will also be able to read books in full colour and sample opening chapters.
