South Shields based online nutrition planner, planmyfood, is offering a free trial for anyone looking for a healthier start to the new year.

The diet-planning software analyses the nutritional content of meals to create user-friendly, daily nutrition guidance.

The software tells people if their meals are within guidelines for their medical condition or diet.

It was created by founder Paul Dayan to help a family-member battling an eating disorder.

Paul also uses the product himself after being diagnosed with raised cholesterol.

“Unlike traditional diet planners, planmyfood doesn’t just focus on slimming and weight loss”, he said.

North East software firm sets national example on turning Autism into ability

Staffed almost entirely by analysts who have Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, social enterprise ‘Autism Works’ is turning positive traits of the condition into unique skills.

The Newcastle-based company is the first in England to take such steps in employing people with Autism, of which 85% are currently unemployed in the UK.

Offering software and website testing services to clients across the region, Autism Works recognised that some of the characteristics of the condition can make people with Autism exceptionally talented software testers.

“People on the Autism spectrum can make brilliant employees; diligent, loyal, precise and very often highly-intelligent”, managing director Peter Macdonald said.

“What is more, their attention to detail, methodical approach to tasks and frequent enjoyment of repetitive processes can make them exceptional software testers.”

That’s the question Sunderland-based developers Guroo answered when they crammed their entire company into the same Peugeot iON.

The 8-man team provide online functional skills resources and training aimed at improving the learning of 14-19-year-olds in maths, English and ICT to more than 700 schools, colleges and training providers nationwide.

The car will help lower the costs of staff visiting local customers while also doing their bit for the environment.

Young people should learn about software, not PowerPoint

Teaching IT in schools is still frustratingly as similar and uninspiring as it was decades ago, David Dunn from Sunderland Software City says.

The Chief Operating Officer of the regional software initiative was inspired to write a blog post after watching BBC’s Newsnight feature about a report on the games industry and ICT education.

After having suffered through painstakingly boring Word-sessions during his own school years, Dunn was not pleased to hear little had changed in modern IT education.

“It’s hugely disappointing to see similar frustrations being voiced by young people in the report”, he wrote.

American firm chooses North East partner to kick off European expansion

Marc Fowler's Wolf Consultancy has been chosen as a partner by one of North America’s fastest-growing software firms.

One of North America’s fastest-growing software firms has chosen a North East company to act as their exclusive agent in the UK.

Newcastle-based Wolf Consultancy will be the UK representative for Canadian firm Namtek’s erpwizard software, a cloud-based system offering customers in the manufacturing and distribution industry greater control over stocks, sales and shipping.

The deal follows three months of support from Sunderland Software City while Namtek investigated establishing a UK presence.
