Spotify has hit one million subscribers. Not literally, of course – that would be crazy, not to mention an insane amount of effort – but there are now a million people paying to listen to streaming music on Spotify.
Spotify reached a million users almost two years ago to the day, on March 2nd 2009 – that was including those listening to their freebie service, of course. A million paying subscribers is a bigger achievement, certainly in terms of keeping the outfit going.

As speculation mounts over if/when it will launch in the States, Spotify has published its 2009 financial results.

They make for an interesting, if somewhat predictable, read – the headline being that the music streaming service has lost £16.66 million, based on revenues of £11.32 million. Along with We7 (and Spiral Frog before it), Spotify has pretty much created a new revenue model for the global music industry in the form of advertising sales. There has been much doubt expressed over whether ad revenue will be enough to sustain the industry and Spotify’s figures indicate that it won’t be.

The idea of a free trial is nothing new. But as new web services keep rapidly cropping up, the ‘freemium model’ is becoming harder to ignore for many digital entrepreneurs.
We asked Richard Myers, managing director of Industrial Strength and a mentor in the entrepreneurial Digital City Fellowship scheme, “what is freemium and why should young entrepreneurs give their services away for free?”.
An old idea with a new name, the freemium model is based on the simple idea of giving part of the service for free to get people hooked, Richard explains.

Music streaming services are becoming increasingly attractive to advertisers as their audiences grow rapidly in size, New Media Age reports.
Ad-funded music streaming service We7 announced reaching a tipping point in March – for the first time monthly streaming costs were fully covered by ad revenue.
According to the CEO of We7 Steve Purdham, the service has grown from 10,000 users in 2008 to 3 million in only two years.

Sunderland entrepreneur, Kieron Donoghue’s Sharemyplaylists.com is set for global success after receiving a six figure investment from local investors.
Launched in March last year, the social media site has become a popular place for Spotify users to share playlists and talk about their favourite artists and bands.
The site currently has over 17,000 playlists which makes it the largest site of its kind. It’s working in co-operation with major record labels and features celebrity playlists from the likes of Robbie Williams, Alicia Keys, Will Young, The Gorillaz and Leona Lewis.

Referred to as ‘the Spotify for movies’, on-demand video service, Voddler, is being pioneered in Scandinavia.
Already around 400,000 Swedes are streaming free videos via Voddler, and the service is reported to be taking on Norway, Denmark and Finland this year. Deals with Disney and Paramount accelerated the success story last October, giving Voddler the access to thousands of their titles.
