Jobs in social media set to boom as employers focus on digital

socialmediasavvySocial media is a ‘business priority’ for a quarter of UK companies in 2011, generating employment possibilities for social-media-savvy people, according to a new report.

The report shows that 71% of UK businesses are aiming to improve their social media presence in the coming year, while 25% are putting it at or near the top of their ‘things to do’ list.

Despite the fact the UK lags behind the US in this area, (only half of businesses use social media in the UK compared with 90% in the US), the report predicts a boom in the demand for social media skills, with thousands of short term vacancies set to become available.

Regional accents transfer to digital world, says study

dude_wtfUS researchers have found that Twitter is full of its own kinds of geographical dialects.

A team at Carnegie Mellon University examined 380,000 messages from Twitter during one week in March 2010.

In total, they went through 4.5 million words containing shorthand expressions which they managed to link with geotags of the messages sent form mobile phones.

'Ouch Map' shows where Brits hurt

ouchmap_bodyA new social media mash-up ‘Ouch Map’ is set to map minor injuries to see which parts of the body we hurt most.

Launched by the UK health insurance provider Health365.com, the Ouch Map calls for tweets from anyone who has an ‘ouch’ moment.

The tweets should be marked with a hashtag #ouch365 and outline the part of the body that hurts as well as a pain rating form 1 to 10. The information is then displayed in real time on a glowing skeleton.

Celebs' Twitter campaign struggling to hit its target

digital_life_sacrificeThe ‘Digital Life Sacrifice’ campaign, which saw a host of celebrities become invisible on social media channels for charity, has so far not proved a success.

The idea behind the campaign, initiated by pop star Alicia Keys, was for celebrities to sacrifice their digital life until their fans had raised $1m for the ‘Keep a Child Alive’ charity.

It was initially believed that one day would be more than enough to hit the target but after three days the campaign had managed to raise little over $200 000.

Tim Burton turns to tweeters for co-writing help

stainboyFilm-maker visionary Tim Burton is writing his new story with the help of the Twitterverse.

The story-telling experiment invites anyone to chip in to create a tale about Burton’s beloved character Stainboy with a tweet featuring a hashtag #BurtonStory.

Each day the best tweet is selected to continue the story which at the moment is 18 parts long. The final version will be published on 6 December.

The Queen debuts on Facebook

The lucrative idea of reaching more than half a billion people across the world has become too tempting for the PR department of the Royal Family to resist.

As her latest social media venture, the 84-year-old monarch has had her own Facebook-page launched today.

“Facebook is probably the last bastion of social media the Royal Household had not yet entered, and the Queen is keen to be fully signed up to the 21st century”, a royal aide said.

Durham police tweeting to students

Philip Raine, Durham police community support officer, believes the informal tone of social media will help to build links with the students.

BBC quoted some of the latest tweets of the team:

“Just caught 2 students on The Bailey with traffic signs. The first freshers we have found that have been ‘men at work.’”

'Cheryl Kerl' top fake tweeter

A fake Cheryl Cole Twitter account has been ranked highest on See Saw’s list of the top fake tweeters.

Cheryl Kerl has been tweeting in phonetic Geordie since the 2009 series of X Factor, and has developed a cult following on the microblogging site.

The success has also landed Kerl a book deal. ‘Woath It? Coase Ah Am, Pet’ hit the shops earlier this month promising to reveal “Cheryl’s take on modun leef”.

Gillette has launched a Twitter campaign to find out if the public prefers bearded or clean-shaven men.

The campaign will see identical twins Dean and George Georgiandes – one shaven, one bearded – tackle challenges such as a pasta-eating competition and trying to get better service from shop assistants.
